چکیده

Histograms are ubiquitous tools in numerous machine learning and computer vision tasks. It is common practice to use distances such as L2 for comparing histograms. This practice assumes that the histogram domains are aligned. However this assumption is violated through quantization, shape deformation, light changes, etc. The Earth Mover’s Distance (EMD) [12] is a cross-bin distance that addresses this alignment problem. EMD is defined as the minimal cost that must be paid to transform one histogram into the other, where there is a “ground distance” between the basic features that are aggregated into the histogram:

From Word Embeddings To Document Distances

We present the Word Mover’s Distance (WMD), a novel distance function between text documents. Our work is based on recent results in word embeddings that learn semantically meaningful representations for words from local cooccurrences in sentences. The WMD distance measures the dissimilarity between two text documents as the minimum amount of distance that the embedded words of one document nee...

Building Earth Mover's Distance on Bilingual Word Embeddings for Machine Translation

Following their monolingual counterparts, bilingual word embeddings are also on the rise. As a major application task, word translation has been relying on the nearest neighbor to connect embeddings cross-lingually. However, the nearest neighbor strategy suffers from its inherently local nature and fails to cope with variations in realistic bilingual word embeddings. Furthermore, it lacks a mec...

Indexing Earth Mover's Distance over Network Metrics

The Earth Mover’s Distance (EMD) is a well-known distance metric for data represented as probability distributions over a predefined feature space. Supporting EMD-based similarity search has attracted intensive research effort. Despite the plethora of literature, most existing solutions are optimized for Lp feature spaces (e.g., Euclidean space); while in a spectrum of applications, the relatio...
